Greg - Vic Club #5 & AMCC #1No Hair Racing Race Report
Victoria MC Club #5, October 4th 2003
Auckland MC Club #1, October 5th 2003
The last round of the Victoria Club series saw Bob and I on the road again to Manfeild. The weather forecast was for rain the whole weekend but as we drove down on Friday afternoon we didn't expect the North Westerly storm that hit the North Island that night causing slips on many roads and blocking traffic out of Wellington.
We arrived safely at Uncle Fred's in Feilding, had dinner and went to bed early. In the morning it was still raining and the track conditions were wet and windy. A lot of debris had fallen on the extended track so the decision was made to race on the short track.
Both Bob and I had a trouble free day with our bikes allowing us to concentrate on riding and staying upright in the poor conditions. I managed to get a fastest lap of 1 min 29 secs about 4 seconds off the leaders which wasn't too bad and in the two races for Formula 3 I placed 4th and 6th holding on to a top 10 placing for the series. Bob finished 9th & 12th giving him 16th for the series.
In the formula 2 races everyone was going hard in the rain and I couldn't keep up with the Ducatis that I had in round 4 and placed 9th and 13th finishing the series in 13th. Bob was right behind me in both races finishing 11th & 14th for a series placing of 18th.
Hail on the track ended the days racing, so we changed sprockets for Pukekohe the next day, packed up and arrived home at 10:30pm.
The next morning we crawled out of bed to find it still raining, but we couldn't miss the first round of the Auckland Club series, so off again we went. This time only 45 minutes drive to Pukekohe which made life easier.
The rain stopped as we got to the track and with a strong westerly wind blowing, the track soon dried out for our practice session except for 3 small streams of water running across the hairpin and a few puddles on turns 2 & 3. I qualified in 6th position with Bob in 9th which put me on the front row of the grid and Bob on row 2.
In race 1, I got a great start and was 3rd down the back straight. Bob got an even better start and nosed past me on turn 1 but he couldn't hold it and I pushed past on the outside. Lyndsay Ross on his Honda came past on lap 3 but my Yammy was quicker and I passed him again down the back straight. However he was too good for me under brakes and thru the corners and I couldn't stay with him. #71 passed me as well on a newer FZR400 then Lyndsay crashed after hitting a puddle on the apex of turn 3 and I finished in 4th.
Race 2 was similar but this time Lyndsay stayed upright and I was relegated to 5th. We ran out of time due to rain stoppages and oil spills on the track so only 2 races this round but a good start to the series with me in 4th place overall. Next round is on Nov 16th but it looks like I'll be travelling for work, so Bob will have to wave the flag for No Hair racing.
Thanks again to our sponsors Haldane Motorcycles, WEBDES.CO.NZ, and SSSLodge, and thanks Uncle Fred for your hospitality once again.
